The Bad Guys 2
The Bad Guys 2 review
A Slick Sequel with Fresh Tricks
Set shortly after the events of the original film, The Bad Guys 2 opens with our beloved crew of reformed villains trying to live clean lives. Mr. Wolf (voiced with suave charm by Sam Rockwell) has traded schemes for community service, Mr. Snake (Marc Maron) is reluctantly learning to trust others, and the rest of the gang — Mr. Shark, Ms. Tarantula, and Mr. Piranha — are each struggling with the complexities of their new “good guy” identities.
But peace is short-lived. A mysterious new villain begins orchestrating a series of high-profile heists across the city — each one resembling the signature style of The Bad Guys’ old exploits. To clear their names and confront their pasts, the crew decides to return to the scene, not as criminals, but as undercover agents trying to outsmart the imposters. What unfolds is part detective thriller, part redemption arc, and all heart.
Visual Style: Slicker and Smarter
Where the first film played with a cel-shaded, graphic novel aesthetic, the sequel leans into it even more. The animation style remains bold and kinetic, with crisp outlines and expressive movement that gives the characters a real sense of swagger. Action scenes are choreographed with comic book flair, employing dynamic angles and sharp editing that evoke classic capers without overwhelming the senses.
New locations — including an underworld speakeasy for reformed criminals and a sleek tech hub run by the city’s elite — give the film more visual variety than its predecessor. Colors pop, nighttime chases glow with neon, and every frame feels purposefully composed for both excitement and emotional resonance.
Performances: A Cast in Sync
Sam Rockwell once again anchors the voice cast with his effortless cool and surprisingly earnest delivery. Marc Maron brings grumbly vulnerability to Snake, and Awkwafina (Ms. Tarantula) gets more to do here with an arc that explores themes of self-worth and leadership. Craig Robinson (Mr. Shark) and Anthony Ramos (Mr. Piranha) provide comedic rhythm, and their bond as part of the gang deepens with some surprisingly heartfelt moments.
New additions to the cast help shake things up. The standout is a sly, charismatic fox detective voiced by Stephanie Beatriz, whose motives keep you guessing. Their dynamic with Wolf walks a tightrope between rivalry and mutual respect, making for some of the film’s sharpest scenes.
Themes: Morality, Identity, and Loyalty
Like the first film, The Bad Guys 2 explores moral gray areas in a way that respects its audience — young and older alike. Redemption isn’t painted as a single act, but a continuous process filled with doubts, setbacks, and moments of temptation. The idea that people — or anthropomorphic animals — can change, and that society must also allow for that change, feels timely and impactful.
The film doesn’t preach, though. Instead, it lets character choices drive these themes. When Snake is faced with a betrayal, or when Tarantula takes a stand for her newfound values, the film grounds these moments in real emotion, allowing the audience to care about more than just whether the next heist will succeed.
Music and Editing: Perfect Rhythm
Daniel Pemberton returns with another eclectic, funky score that balances jazz riffs, orchestral swells, and synth pulses. The soundtrack moves in lockstep with the action, creating an energetic pulse that helps even dialogue-heavy scenes feel alive. The film’s editing is equally slick — fast when it needs to thrill, slow when it needs to land an emotional beat.
