WWE 2K23 Servers Shut Down Less Than Two Years After Launch, Leaving Players Disheartened

As gaming continues to evolve, changes often occur rapidly, leaving players with bittersweet feelings about their favorite titles. In a recent development within the WWE gaming franchise, significant transitions are taking place.

The servers for WWE 2K23 are being taken offline down today, marking less than two years since its release on March 14, 2023. According to reports, January 6, 2025, is the date when online functionalities, including online matches and Community Creations, will come to an end. Players will not have access to any online game mode after this shutdown; however, those who already own the game can still enjoy offline experiences. Additionally, the game, along with all Virtual Currency and DLC/Add-Ons, was removed from sale in November.

This closure also renders the PS5 and PS4 Platinum Trophy for WWE 2K23 unobtainable, becoming yet another trophy that fades away with the servers’ cessation. Many gamers have long advocated for the platform holders to implement changes to achievements and trophies when a server shuts down, allowing players to complete their challenges even after the online support ends.

In its review, WWE 2K23 received a rating of 8 out of 10. Reviewers noted that while the Showcase mode didn’t shine as brightly as its main subject, John Cena, the game's focus on refinement rather than complete innovation helps maintain WWE 2K23 as a leading title in wrestling simulations.

With WWE 2K23's server shutdown, the latest WWE 2K24 stands as the sole game in the series offering online capabilities. Speculation surrounds the anticipated release of WWE 2K25, expected in March this year. Yet, growing concerns among fans about the worth of investing time in these games surface, especially as they may not endure for even a couple of years.

Publisher 2K has a history of discontinuing its sports games shortly after their release, as highlighted by the earlier closure of NBA 2K23's servers in December 2024. In contrast, competitor EA appears to maintain the online components of its titles for a longer duration, with FIFA and Madden servers often remaining operational for several years post-launch.
