The developers behind "Slay the Princess" are encouraging players to download their wildly popular game illegally rather than viewing gameplay on YouTube

Indie studio Black Tabby Games has recently retracted a set of social media messages that suggested their growing base of potential fans to acquire the game through unofficial channels after gaining popularity through a Markiplier gameplay video.

Originally, Black Tabby recommended eager players to visit Steam to purchase the game themselves prior to diving into a YouTube series, given the game's high responsiveness to user decisions, which ensures each session is uniquely tailored to the individual.

As observed by PCGN, despite Black Tabby hosting a Steam discount event to lure in prospective buyers, the company went a step ahead by proposing that those unable to afford the game at the moment should seek alternative means to access it.

"For those catching up with the Markiplier 'Slay the Princess' series – if you haven't experienced it on your own yet, you'll enjoy the content more after you've played. The game dynamically adapts to your decisions, offering a custom experience with each play," the developers announced on a social media outlet, X.
"Definitely check out the Markiplier Let's Play, too the first episode is top-notch. By the way, Steam Summer Sale kicks off on [27th June]. If you're planning to wait for a price cut, feel free to obtain the game through other ways first.

"If you're not in a position to buy the game at all, go ahead and obtain it by any means necessary!" a subsequent post suggested. "It's no issue for us, and you always have the option to purchase later if you feel the experience was worth it. And then join Mr. Plier's audience."

"I was eager to see the gameplay since I wanted to try it but don't have the funds currently due to job loss, but with your endorsement, I'll go access it right away, and I'll definitively grab it when I'm employed again," a supporter commented.

"Enjoy the journey!" Black Tabby replied, leaving this as one of the few remaining posts up. "Steam should seamlessly recognize game saves from an unofficial version if you opt for the legitimate one later (But make sure to look after your own financial situation first)."

'Slay the Princess' launched in October 2023, enticing players with the tagline: "You're here to slay the princess. Don't trust her words."

The moody visual novel is available with a 20 percent discount on Steam, or curious players can test out the free demo. A console release is anticipated around autumn/Q3 2024.
