Ron Gilbert's New Roguelike Adventure: Ascending Purgatory with a Twist
- 2025-08-21 05:13:00

Ron Gilbert, recognized for his classic LucasArts adventures like Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island as well as his more recent work on Thimbleweed Park, is taking a bold new direction. In a departure from his familiar point-and-click style, his upcoming project ventures into the roguelike genre while keeping his signature humor and distinctive personality.
The game, developed by his studio Terrible Toybox and published by MicroProse, unfolds in a mysterious state resembling purgatory. Players are invited to control at least five unique characters, each tasked with the challenge of advancing upward as a relentless entity pursues them with every upward scroll. True to the roguelike tradition, useful bonuses and abilities "are accessible exclusively during each designated period" run, making every playthrough a fresh test of skill and resilience.
